Wildmandl Channel by Dave Lukens has mostly bird hunting and surfing videos. It also includes some flying videos from my USAF figher pilot days and family videos, of course. The bird hunting videos are full of action and are mostly of my Brittanys in Arizona--I try to get the video camera in close to the dogs while they do their work. I have some short surfing videos posted now, however now that UA-cam allows longer videos, I will post some of my longer surf videos, including surfing in Peru and Africa. I am also updating the channel with some previously unpublished hunting videos. "Hunting Mearns' Quail" has finally been published in its entirety.

The giggle puss in the beginning of the video should have all his tower qualifications permanently removed, removed from the tower and give article 15 for disrespect and insubordination. I've seen too many children in uniform that were man babies that had no self control or military bearing and in a life and death situation it's not just unprofessional it's interfering with the train of thought of those trying to save others.

I was there when that happened at McChord. First day of our ORI. Just had transitioned from F106's to F-15's. It's a shame that people younger than I have no clue that these pics were Acapella because the Smart Phone DIDN'T EXIST! Someone, luckily, had a camera available.

Phenomenal dogs, and nice commentary to go with it. Funny how those that claim to support conservation and bird populations frequently seem to do what is most destructive to them. If only those legislating were also diligent hunters they might actually become true conservationists.
Great video! I always said old school is the best school. But that's just my opinion.

Gambel's likely OK, but not great. We did not get much fall and winter rain. Much of Mearns' country was severely overgrazed. Last year, my best spots held very few birds. Not surprising since they were totally nuked. I'm not optimistic. Last time I saw this level of grazing, it took years to recover. There are always some somewhere, though.

Robert, that's not an issue down here. I can assure you Border Patrol is not lifting finger prints off weed bales to see who dropped it along the Mexican border. It's not 70-yr old retired fighter pilots carrying this stuff in. LOL. I see Border Patrol daily while hunting and did tell them where exactly the bales were. They knew the place. It's common a occurrence.

Great video quality! I was just down in southern AZ and didn't see a single bird. Thanks for sharing this, at least I know there are a few birds left.
T. Kinsey. Thanks for the comment. This is a typical Mearns’ year of my 40 years of hunting and it’s harder to find birds than in recent seasons. This is normal. It would be a tough, but not impossible, year to learn how to find Mearns’. Dogs take a few days with good birds numbers, so this year it would take a dog even longer. Normally you could go to Hog or Gardner to learn, but with lower numbers of birds, it even takes experience in those canyons. But, birds are there. Don’t give up on Mearns’. Once you and the dogs figure it out, there are always enough birds and there is nothing like it.

Hi Scott, Mearns’ are doing fine. It’s a typical season in my 40 years of hunting, but folks got too used to great seasons and they don’t happen all the time. I’ve been out for 11 days and found enough to stay happy everyday! Even the hunted spots have birds, but it’s best to go where other hunters don’t go...and there’s plenty of that! I mostly hunt alone now, so I’ve not done much video. I’ve been posting stories and photos on my Facebook page (Dave Lukens) instead. Thanks, Take care!

Those shelling operations look very dangerous with all the exposed spinning chains and sprockets (no chain guards)...Loose fitting clothing could spell diaster. It's a good video for those of us that like antique equipment...!
Mr. Lukens, I sure hope you are still hunting and making films. I live in Montana but my favorite is hunting Mearns quail each year. Have you switched to a new venue. I would subscribe. Wade Johnson
Wade, Call me Dave. Thanks for the comment. Yes, still hunting and leaving for Mearns' in the morning. Moose and I got a few last week. I'm only here on UA-cam, just haven't done a video in awhile. I'm getting old: carrying camera gear is a bit of a chore. Usually I'm alone and I'm down to one dog, so I haven't been as fired up to do a video. Hunting with friends for a few days, so maybe I'll get my video gear together and take it along. Moose is going to hunt with his sister, so that would be nice to film. Due to injury I'm shooting only .410, but that is going well and might provide some entertainment on video. I hope you have or had a good season!
wildmandl Thanks for the reply Dave. I hunted with my Dad and his friends 10 days or so around the first of the year. The snow made things very interesting. Lots of grass and some birds, but not a lot. We have good dogs and had a good time. I watch and re-watch many of your videos because it is obvious that you hunt like we do, but you do better with video. I love hearing the birds flush and the subtle chirp as they fly. Back in Montana now, so I just have to find good content and dream. You and Rick do a great job! I look forward to your next efforts. Wade
